To deploy Proton VPN using Microsoft Intune, follow these steps. The deployment involves adding the Proton VPN application as a line-of-business (LOB) app, or using a Win32 app package, and assigning it to target devices or user groups.

Steps to Deploy Proton VPN with Intune

Step 1: Download the Proton VPN Installer

    1. Go to the Proton VPN Download Page.
    2. Download the Windows installer (.exe or .msi) version of the Proton VPN app.

Step 2: Prepare the Application for Deployment

There are two methods to prepare Proton VPN for deployment, depending on the installer format you downloaded:

Option 1: Deploy the MSI Installer
    1. If the installer is an .msi file:
      • This format is simpler to deploy because Intune natively supports MSI files.
    2. Upload MSI to Intune:
      • Go to the Microsoft Intune Admin Center at https://endpoint.microsoft.com.
      • Navigate to Apps > All apps > Add.
      • In the App type dropdown, select Line-of-business app.
      • Upload the .msi installer file.
    3. Configure the Application:
      • Name: Proton VPN.
      • Publisher: Proton.
      • Description: Add details like “Secure VPN client for Proton VPN users.”
      • Leave other settings as default unless specific configuration is needed.
    4. Assign the App:
      • Assign the app to the required user or device groups under Assignments.

Option 2: Deploy the EXE Installer as a Win32 App

If the installer is an .exe file, you must convert it into a Win32 app package:

    1. Convert the EXE File to Intune Win32 Format:
      • Download the Microsoft Win32 Content Prep Tool from the Microsoft Docs.
      • Use the tool to convert the .exe installer into a .intunewin file:
        IntuneWinAppUtil.exe -c <source_folder> -s <ProtonVPN_installer.exe> -o <output_folder>

    2. Upload the Win32 App to Intune:
      • Go to Apps > All apps > Add.
      • In the App type dropdown, select Win32 app.
      • Upload the .intunewin file generated in the previous step.
    3. Specify Install Command:
      • For Proton VPN, the install command is typically:
        ProtonVPN_installer.exe /silent /install

      • Specify the uninstall command:
        ProtonVPN_installer.exe /uninstall

    4. Configure App Information:
      • Name: Proton VPN.
      • Publisher: Proton.
      • Add any additional details as required.
    5. Assign the App:
      • Assign the app to the appropriate user or device groups.

    Step 3: Monitor Deployment

    1. After deploying the app, monitor its status in Intune:
      • Go to Apps > Monitor > Device Install Status.
      • Check if the app installs successfully on target devices.
    2. On the client device:
      • Open the Company Portal app.
      • Verify that Proton VPN appears as an available app (if not assigned as mandatory).

Step 4: Optional Configuration for VPN Profiles

To simplify the user experience, you can preconfigure VPN profiles using Intune:

    1. Create a VPN Profile:
      • Go to Devices > Configuration profiles > + Create profile.
      • Select:
        • Platform: Windows 10 and later.
        • Profile Type: Templates > VPN.
    2. Configure VPN Settings:
      • Connection name: Proton VPN.
      • Server name/address: Use Proton VPN’s server addresses (refer to their documentation).
      • Configure authentication and routing settings as needed.
    3. Assign the Profile:
      • Assign the VPN profile to target device groups.

    Verification

    1. Ensure the app is installed and functional:
      • Check on a managed device that Proton VPN installs successfully.
      • Verify that users can open the app and connect to VPN servers.
    2. Test VPN connectivity:
      • Confirm that the VPN profile is applied (if configured) and the connection works.

This process allows you to deploy and manage Proton VPN across your organization’s devices seamlessly using Microsoft Intune. Let me know if you need assistance with any specific steps!
